Chapter 11

“Are you gay?”

Harper was completely taken aback by the question and pissed that Corey asked in her in the school hallway where they were surrounded by everyone. “You act like you don’t know me here, and now you want to discuss my personal life? Piss off, Corey.”

“Everyone’s talking about it, and it’s cool if you are. I just wanna know.”

Harper opened her locker in Corey’s face. “I’m sure you know I could give a shit about what people think.”

“Lydia’s cute,” Corey said as she peeked around the door.

“Are you just looking for a confirmation, so you can go back and tell everyone that I’m a lesbian?”

“Yeah, basically. People ask me questions, and I don’t wanna spread rumors.”

Harper closed the door to her locker and met Corey’s gaze. “Go back and tell them it’s none of their damn business.” She turned and left Corey in her wake. Her friends Ashlynn and Selene had already asked the same question, right after they bitched about being ignored. Both of them promised to be very accepting if Harper would’ve wanted to include Lydia in their circle, but she didn’t. She was selfish with her time when it came to Lydia.

As friends went, Ashlynn and Selene were on a completely different plane compared to Lydia. Conversations with her buddies were about boys, school events, gossip, and general bullshit. With Lydia, Harper talked about her dreams. Sometimes, they didn’t talk at all, and there were no complaints or questions as to why she was quiet. Lydia was a soul friend, someone who understood Harper, and she loved that. For the first time in her young life, she felt connected to someone on a level she didn’t think existed among her peers. Lydia didn’t care about being popular or concern herself with social circles. She had her own mind, did her own thing, and Harper could totally identify with that.

Harper pushed through the double doors at the end of the hall, and a cool breeze swept over her skin as sunlight temporarily blinded her. Lydia parked in the same place every day at the far end of the student lot. Harper hurried, though she knew Lydia wouldn’t leave without her. But as she drew closer, she saw Lydia sitting on the tailgate of her truck, and she wasn’t alone.

Aubrey Malone stood close by occasionally flipping her blond hair. She reached out and touched one of the bracelets on Lydia’s wrist. Like most girls at school, Aubrey claimed to be bi because it drove the guys insane. But Aubrey had taken it one step further and had kissed Violet Crochet in front of an audience to prove her point. This wasn’t the first time Harper had noticed Aubrey paying attention to Lydia. She made a special effort to say hi when they passed in the halls, always with the damn hair flip that had begun to annoy Harper. Aubrey also had a boyfriend and had dated a lot of guys at school, including Mason, who bragged that he was going broke buying rubbers to keep up with Aubrey’s demands.
